Untitled Composition in D Minor

Oil and spray paint on canvas, 100x100cm, 2018.

Untitled is part of a series of abstract works created between 2015-2019 which use sequences of the golden ratio and colour as visual equivalents of rhythm and inflection.

In the history of abstract painting, there has often been a focus on a paring back to and demonstration of essential principles; Nick Gordon uses these isolated principles as starting off points. Ideas of line, colour and proportion are articulated, repeated and varied throughout each work, much as a theme is developed in a fugue or a modal jazz improvisation.

Composition in D Minor is a synthesis of Chopin and traffic, of skylines, computer chips and the great night sky. I’m trying to create harmonies among the heterogenously fragmenting experiences of urban life.” — Nick Gordon
